How to get Lightroom 3 to import duplicate RAW and .jpeg files

I’m knee deep playing around with and learning about my new D90 and so far I love it. One of the settings I’ve been wanting to use is the camera’s ability to shoot RAW (or in Nikon’s case, .nef files) and .jpeg files at the same time. But, when I plugged in the D90 for the first time and imported the files all I saw were the RAW files. I was puzzled as why Lightroom only imported the .nef files and not both images.

Anyway - after doing some looking online and not finding a clear answer (maybe this is a simple issue to everyone else) I solved the issue myself and wanted to share what I found to solve my problem.

Step 1:

Open Lightroom and navigate to Edit -> Preferences and make sure the “General” tab is selected. About halfway down you’ll see a section called “Import Options”. Check the box next to where is says “Treat JPEG files new to raw files as separate photos”.

Step 2:

Again, in Lightroom, go to File -> “Import Photos” and you’ll see the import dialog window. On the right hand side, under File Handling un-check the box next to “Don’t import suspected duplicates”

And that’s it - that should take care of your problem. Now, when you plug in your camera to import your pictures, you’ll see both the .jpeg and .nef (or raw) files in Lightroom. Happy shooting!
