What are your photography goals for the New Year?

There’s a great article over at Digital Photography School that gives 30 photographic goals to consider for the new year and it got me thinking about what I plan to do with my photography over the next 12 months.
Granted, I’ve only had my new camera for just over a week but there are 1,000 things I’d like to do/learn about over the next 365 days. But, I have to be realistic about what I can accomplish - I’m starting a MBA program in March which will take up a lot of time for the next 2+ years.
Here are 10 goals I’d like to accomplish before the ball drops at the end of the year (these are just off the top of my head):
- Learn to get the most out of Lightroom 3. I can use the library and develop modules but there’s so much more to Lightroom that I barely scratch the surface.
- Continue writing for Moo and Loo photography. This has become a place for me to catalog and share articles and thoughts on my photography and my inspirations.
- Read more photography books. I’m slowly making my way through Within The Frame by David DuChemin and as soon as I’m done I’ll be reading Vision Mongers.
- Publish a book - not an Amazon kind of book but a Blurb book of some of my images. I’ve been wanting to make one for awhile now so I just need to get it done.
- Find a photography mentor. I think this would be huge for me and I have somewhat of lead but you never know how it will work out.
- Experiment with portrait work. Luckily for me I have two awesome models at home that will have to be my guinea pigs for this one.
- Get an off camera flash and learn how to use it. My D90 can trigger an off camera flash so I’m good there - I just need to learn how to use it to do some portrait work.
- Continue to network with local photographers. There’s a photography group here in town but it hasn’t gained much momentum but hopefully that will change
- Challenge myself to develop my vision and chase that vision passionately
- Oh, I almost forgot, take more and more pictures
I think that’s a pretty respectable list and I’m sure I’ll make some changes as the year progresses. Here’s to a great new year and happy shooting!
