Take better, not just bigger photographs

I was listening to a podcast awhile back (I can’t remember which one) where David duChemin was being interviewed and he said something to the effect of “as photographers, we need to focus on taking better, not just bigger photographs”. His comment struck a nerve with me and has been on my mind for quite some time - how can I start taking better photographs and stop worrying about megapixels and print sizes?
Since I’m getting back into photography after taking some time off, I find myself seeing things in a whole different light - no pun intended. But, what I’m trying to develop, through the help of this blog, is my vision for my photography.
- What do I love to photograph?
- How do I share my vision with others?
- What do I want to communicate through my photography?
- How do I balance my photography with my job and role as a father?
I find that photography is a great release and an even better way to balance my creativity with my day-to-day life and job. As of now, I just fit my photography in around my life and look for the little things that pop-up and catch my eye. What I haven’t done is set a course to go and actually photograph something specific.
Maybe that will come with time - and maybe not…maybe my current approach will end up being the most effective way to develop my vision since I have limited time and resources and I’ll have to channel my creativity more effectively. Only time will tell.
