Sites to share your photography portfolio online

I don’t want to give too much away, but in David DuChemin’s The Inspired Eye Part II, he emphasizes the importance of sharing your photography, as well as other types of visual art, with the world. He emphasizes that the world is a better place when artists share their work with, not only other artists, but also with the general population.
But, with so many options out there, what’s the best website to share your photographs and art with everyone? I don’t have a good answer to that question as I’ve struggled with the answer myself. Many sites out there seem to cater to some artists more than others and, depending on the type and size of audience you want to reach, this might not be an easy answer.
Here’s a list of sites that I have come across for sharing your photography portfolios online:
- Flickr
- Tumblr
- Wordpress.com
- Wordpress.org
- Blogger
- DeviantArt
- National Geographic My Shot
- SmugMug
- Zenfolio
- FotoBlur
- Photoshelter
Comparing these popular sites like comparing apples to oranges; Some of them are free and some of them are not while others allow e-commerce/shopping carts and others don’t. It all depends on what you want to do with your photography and what kind of audience you want to reach. Also, I’m sure there are many more photo sharing sites out there so, if you know of one please leave me a comment below.
This site runs on Tumblr (see why photographers love Tumblr) because I like the simplicity in creating posts and the ability to easily tweak your HTML and CSS. But, in the long run, I’m not sure Tumblr is the best answer for me and for my photography. But, more on that in a later post.
